Question: Just how “uninsured” are all those “uninsured” people?

Key Issues in Analyzing
Major Health Insurance Proposals
December 2008“A recent study by Hadley and others, which used that
analytic approach, examined a sample of medical claims
for uninsured individuals and projected that they would
receive about $28 billion in uncompensated care in
2008.”That’s about 622 tax dollars spent for each “uninsured” person.
——————A 2003 study in Health Affairs estimated that uninsured people in the U.S. received approximately $35 billion in uncompensated care in 2001.

Somehow, that carefully crafted vision of millions of Americans (and non-Americans) dying in the streets for want of health care just doesn’t play.
Answer: There is about 10 million younger people who refuse insurance to save money. (If you are a 22 yr old in good health with big student loans its worth it.)
There are about 20 million illegals who don’t have insurance, but will be covered under the new plan.
There are about 15 million Americans who need insurance, like all the people who have lost their jobs.
But having a gov run plan doesn’t guarantee anything. Look at the Post Office, Medicare, Social Security, Amtrack, and the Pension Benefit Trust, all run by the federal government and all losing money. What do you do when you are losing money? You have to raise prices (taxes) or limit service.
If this proposed plan is so good, why don’t we try it in a state first to get the bugs out and see if it really works? In the meantime, the fed gov can concentrate on all the “cost savings” they say they can make.
New GOP House Majority Means Lots Of Inter-Party Fights.
Do not lose sight of the fact the Dems control both the Senate and the Executive to block most things. However, the GOP with new found House power will kick up lots of dust and expose failings of the past two years. What this means is mostly two years of gridlock, which is not all that bad.

Question: What amount from my paystub do I enter when it ask for total wages. I’m doing the free tax estimator.?
I’m doing the free tax estimator on the hr block website and using my last paystub to get an estimate on my refund.
Answer: You’ll have to do some number crunching first. Take your gross wages and subtract any pension plan contributions, pre-tax health insurance premiums paid, and any other Section 125 deductions like FSA contributions. The resulting number should be pretty close to what box 1 on your W-2 will show. Needless to say you’ll have to wait for your W-2 to actually file.
