Question: received w2 and never worked for company?

received a w2 from a company in which i NEVER worked for. I have the EIN number, how can I find out about the company. I looked them up in phone book, no listing, called 411 no listing …. searched address on web found address but no phone number help is someone using my social security number

Answer: This could be some sort of SCAM ….. be careful!

What is the name of the company that you received the W2 from
and does the W2 include your correct taxpayer id #?

Do you still have the envelope that it came in and what is the postmark?

This can be tracked down, but you will need to keep all of the information on this bit together.

Question: If you pay cash for a home – a percentage of which is used regularly for business, how can that be expensed?

From what I understand, there are Michigan tax laws allowing deductions for renters and lendees, but what about those responsible people who have chosen not to live their lives in debt? Are they just out of luck?

Answer: strict IRS rules for home office use – you have to use one separate room or area that is NEVER used for anything else – whatever the square footage of that area is, is what portion of rent/mortgage/ utilities, etc you can deduct prorated by the months in a year -ex -1500 sq ft house – one bedroom is your office 150 sq feet. first year-started using i in July. 150/1500 = 10% x 6mos/12mos (50%) = 5% home office use – 10% in following years. separate business phone line would help too. This is for federal tax returns – probably similar for state returns. Renters are eligible also – for federal tax deduction

Question: where can I find a tax lien from the IRS against either a person or a business for free.?

I am looking to search either a business or person to find if a tax lien from the IRS is filed against them. IE a tax levy not a real estate levy

Answer: As far as I know you cannot. There are some commercial databases, such as http://www.knowx.com where you can find this information for a reasonable price.

Question: Does anyone know of a good website to search public records?

I’m looking for free public records for a business I need to get the EIN (employer identification numb) of an arizona based buisness. I have already checked with the az corp commission and maricopa county parcels and tax records with no luck. I sincerely appreciate any help you can offer.

Answer: recorder.maricopa.gov has almost everything. Most employers treat their EIN the same way a private citizen would treat their personal Social Security Number. You would not want it published anywhere. The IRS expects you to get this by phone from the employer. If the employer is no longer in business, you can write a hardship letter to the IRS explaining the problem.
