Question: 1099 breakdown — Urgent!?

Hi,

I received an e-mail from someone I’ve worked with last year on his website and received a total of $500 for my service there.

In this email he writes:

We are taking care of some tax details and would like to send you 1099s. Please provide the information below by Monday:

1) Official business name (your full name if individual)

2) Contact name

3) Tax ID (Corporate EIN number if a company; SSN if an individual)

4) Phone number

5) Complete mailing address

Wouldn’t I be exempt from replying the 1099 because I was paid less than $600 for my service as a lone freelancing individual? Also, I do not know this individual personally and am iffy about sending my SSN as I don’t know my TaxID nor do I work for a company. Is there any way I can mask the SSN (I am a 20 year old unemployed U.S. Citizen) if a reply is mandatory?

Answer: Don’t know where Mark gets his information but it’s not from the Tax Code.

They were required to get your Name, address and SSN before they ever paid you. (If someone refuses to give me their information, they don’t get paid.) And while they are required to cut a 1099 for payments of $600 or more, they are free to cut them for lesser amounts if they choose. (I 1099 everything, even $1.)

If you are uncomfortable about putting your SSN in an e-mail, download Form W-9 from the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf , fill it out, and snail-mail it to them.

If you don’t like handing out your SSN for self-employment gigs, consider getting an EIN from the IRS. You don’t require one if you are not paying employees but it’s a good idea to get one if you do the occasional contract gig as it is much less risky than using your SSN for that. Question: I need to know another way to get my childs daycare TAX ID #/EIN number?

So My son went to his daycare from June 2008 through October 2008. They messed up really bad and I took my son out of their Daycare. This is not a in home daycare! Well I still owe them 100.00$ But I am fighting on having to pay them that as he was not there the whole last month. Anyways I called them today to get their Tax Id / EIN number for my taxes. (I have the appt to get them done tomorrow) and they told me until they recieve their money they will not provide me with that info! I need to know if they are even allowed to do this? Also if their is any other way I can ge this number? I cannot find the reciepts I saved either and I have been looking all over.(As those usually have the tax ID # on them)….Please Help Me! Thanks
As far as the End of the month answer isn’t that for employers not child care centers. I should be able to obtain that number at any time….right?

Answer: They are required to provide their EIN number to you. You could formally request it by given them a W-9 form.

You can often find the EIN Online by searching the organizations name and the keyword ‘employer identification number’ or ‘EIN’ on a web search program.

You could ask one of the other parents who send their children there because they should have or be able to get the EIN.

If they are affiliated with another organization (church, YMCA, city parks department, etc), you could contact the larger organization because they usually have the same EIN or the EIN of the parent organization would be acceptable.

Answer: There are 2 places to go to find out. One would be to go to the local courthouse and check at the information desk. Another would be to go to the CT official state website and click the business link.
