Question: I have a question about Tax Withholding of unemployment benefits.?
I filed for an unemployment benefit claim. On the form I was asked… Do you want taxes withheld from you benefit payments? I answered…. Yes both federal and state taxes at 14%. The company appealed and I lost. Now I must pay them back. My question is… how does the withheld tax from the 3 checks, I received, affect the amount I owe back.
Answer: You will only owe the net amount received for the current year. If this is for past years also, you will owe the gross amount received since the state already sent you the 1099G.
