Wonkbook: Assessing FinReg; Goldman suit settled; oil gusher stopped
Good day for the Obama administration yesterday: FinReg found final approval in the Senate (hope you’re ready to start talking Basel III, now), Goldman Sachs settled the SEC’s civil suit against it for a lot of money and a statement of “regret,” and BP has successfully stopped the oil well from leaking three months after it started.

Lookup EIN

Question: Why aren’t there any Free EIN lookup websites (IRS-hosted or otherwise)??
Most state websites allow free lookup of registered business entities; why not a lookup from the federal level as well?
Answer: You can use freeERISA.com EIN Finder which allows you up to 3 searches for free http://www.freeerisa.com/Extras/EINFinder.asp
You can also use KnowX http://www.knowx.com/fein/search.jsp but it is a paid service
There’s no free lookup because these companies have decided that this is a business they can do — unless IRS offers this service eventually. Until then, it’s in the hands of the private sector, and that typically means ka-ching.
If you don’t want to pay, the option is to look it up the hard way
- For public companies, the EIN (or “IRS No.”) is printed on the first page of 10-Ks, 20-Fs and other SEC filings, which you can get on the Internet for free
- For private companies, EINs are often included in the company’s Dun & Bradstreet report (see “Dun & Bradstreet Reports”), or printed on the company’s invoices
- If the company files with a Secretary of State the EIN may be on its annual report.

Self Employment Tax Computation
Question: Why is only half of a sole proprietor’s self-employment tax deductible in the computation of taxable income?
Answer: The self-employment tax is actually Social Security. Half is deductible because if the sole proprieter worked for a large company, the company would be allowed a deduction on half his Social Security. The rule is an effort to be fair to the little guy.
