Answer: Nothing.

The poor are poor because they consistently make choices that make them poor.

I am not judging them or blaming them or saying they are wrong. I’m not saying they want to be poor. They may not even be aware that they are poor because of their choices. I am just stating the objective fact that it is their choices that make them poor.

If you give a poor man $1,000 to buy groceries for his family and pay off some bills, he will only stop at the dog track or the Off Track Betting office on the way home and gamble away every penny of the money.

Even if he has to go 20 miles out of his way, he will find some way to squander and fritter away the money, so he will arrive home with empty pockets as usual. And his family will eat food they found in the dumpster, like every other day.

And he had to borrow bus fare to get home, so he will only end up deeper in debt.

There is nothing you can do for poor people. They will always go behind your back and completely defeat anything you did to help them out of poverty.

They are just doing what they learned from their Pa and Ma, who are the ones who taught them to make the choices that made them poor, too. Trying to teach them to make different choices is like trying to change their religion. They will only get angry and attack you for trying to change the ways they grew up with.

The ways that made them poor and keep them poor.

That’s why Jesus said “The poor will be with you always.”

Money given to “the poor” does nothing for the poor. It is only to massage the ego and conscience of those who give by throwing their money down a bottomless pit.
