Question: I owe back taxes to California. I now live in AZ. Can California do a earnings withholding in AZ?
I owe back taxes to both the federal government and state of California. I would rather take care of the Feds first for obvious reasons but the state of CA tried to withhold earnings from my previous CA employer. I’m assuming they don’t have any power outside of their state to withhold, is that assumption correct? It’s not that I will not pay them I would just rather satisfy the federal government first.
Answer: The only state that will not honor the rest of the states is Texas.
Most likely they will just start seizing assets.
You should be paying CA first, they are more likely to be aggressive, even arrest you for tax evasion, then the feds are. CA is not kind to tax cheats.
