Question: Are job searching expenses tax deductible in Australia?

I am looking for work and am wondering if expenses related to a job search on tax deductible?

Answer: Now this is indeed a very interesting question. In general no.

However, in a recent case Antis v. Commissioner of Taxation (2009) the Fedral Court ruled that deductions could be claimed against Youth Allowance/Austudy because it was a condition of receiving that allowance that the person be activitly study and to do this they had to incur expenses.

Now I would argue that if you are on Newstart, that as it is a condition of payment that you be activitly seeking fulltime employment that there is likewise expenses associated with this and that are therefore deductible.

If you however not receiving Newstart then no they are not deductible.

Question: Best resource for freelancers/small home business owners?

I’m starting to do freelance photography work. The marketing side I can handle, but the business/tax side is a nightmare.

What is the best resource for small business, taxes, etc.? I need something that breaks it down step by step. Seriously broken down. Something simpler than the Dummies books, lol.

Answer: I don't know if they still do, but Quickbooks did have a free bookkeeping software for small businesses with basic bookkeeping needs. They also have some good info on business.

GoSmallBiz is a good resource too. You can access info and consultants in all areas of business. Legal, insurance, tax, accounting, marketing, HR, sales, etc. There is a monthly fee for it though. Contact me if you want info on that.
