Business Tax San Diego

Question: how to report notary fees on taxes?

This is my first year dealing with reporting notary fees. I am a notary in California and am registered with the County of San Diego with business type – “Business Tax Exempt – Notary”.

So let’s say I had one signing job that paid me $100 – and there were only 6 notarized signatures. Since each signature fee can only be a maximum of $10, I ended up wit $40 extra that is not regular notary fees. Is $100 reported as income or is $40 reported as income on Schedule C for taxes? What if I had another job that gave me only $50 but there were 9 notarized signatures. Can I claim the extra $40 from the $100 job as “notary fees” for the $50 job? Would my total income now be zero between the two jobs? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer: You report the actual amount you collected. Any money received in the capacity of your notary duties is income. If you are not paid, you just don’t report it. All earned income is reportable and taxable.
