Tax Withholding Laws

Question: My tax return was counted as an assest causing termination of my food stamps. Is this a mistake?

Food stamp eligibility is based on gross income. My tax return is not income, it is a return of wages withheld over the year. Counting my tax return as an asset is unfair. It as if my income is being counted twice. What does the law require?

Answer: Your tax return tells the government what your gross income was for the tax year. And it tells the government what the taxable income was too.

And then it tells the government, and you, what you owe at the end of the tax year, or what your refund was.

It sounds like you made too much money, according to your tax return, to qualify for food stamps.

Good Luck
