My EIN Number

My EIN Number

Question: Can someone tell me the difference between a EIN, state sales tax id, and a local sales tax id number??

Please tell me if I am correct…state sales tax id is used to report sales tax to the state…local sales tax id is used to report sales tax to the city…and EIN number is just a number similar to a social security number that is used to recognize the business…Am I right? Also, when I go to purchase from a wholesaler…some wholesalers ask for a “tax id number”…Which number are they referring to? Thanks!

Answer: EIN is a number the federal government issues businesses with employees. If you own your own business and don't have any other employees, you aren't required to have one.

A state sales tax ID or tax ID number is issued by your state. It shows that you are a retailer who is allowed to collect sales tax for the state. You definitely need one of these.

Local sales tax ID number or local business permits are issued by your city and/or county. You will need one of these too.

Most wholesalers will only do business with licensed retailers.
